Instruction will be broken into three areas of study. Conducting Every student will learn the importance of the drum major. All students will have lessons in basic conducting and showmanship. Returning participants, will learn more advanced conducting patterns and choreography that will make the music "come alive" in their conducting. Additionally, participants will be given notes at the end of each day on their individual conducting. To aid in the development of their technique, students will be able to watch videos of their performance each night after camp on this website. Participants should walk away from the experience as a leader able to add to any facet of your program. (Students from the same program will learn to conduct in similar style and form.) Instruction Each participant will develop their teaching/instruction skills through a variety of activities held during their experience. Marching instruction will be the primary vehicle for which observation and instruction skills are developed. Students will learn to run a fundamentals block in a methodical fashion. While running the block, students will look for mistakes being made by staff and other participants so that they may "work through the problem." Every band director knows the importance of having an extra set of eyes to help with instruction. Through the experience students will improve their observational skills and will be better prepared to be that "extra set." (We do not teach students HOW to march and we respect the individual styles of every band program.) Leadership/Communication Leadership and communication skills are vital aspects of any successful drum major. Students will be given tips throughout their experience over topics that include, but are not limited to developing trust, earning respect, attitude, and large group dynamics. Every day, participants will be split into smaller group experiences where they can improve their communication skills through a variety of activities. |
